It sounds like your anxiety is more unhealthy than healthy. No need to panic, I got ya covered! Here are 10 scientifically proven tips to get on a path free of unhealthy anxiety...
TIP #1: Catch and change your irrational beliefs. Trust me, anxiety can be a little bit of a drama queen. When you have unhealthy anxiety you always think in extremes. "I can't handle this, it's too much for me! It's awful, terrible and horrible! If this happens to me, it makes me a complete failure!" etc. Accept that bad things are inevitable, and no matter how much you worry them will not make the probability of them happening to you any less likely.
TIP #2: If you talk to yourself in a way that you would never talk to a best going through a similar problem, it's a sign you'd be better off explaining the problem to yourself more constructively.
TIP #3: Get lots of rest, at least 7 hours of sleep a night. Melatonin can be a helpful natural remedy for those of you already having trouble falling and or staying asleep. (Always check with your doctor before starting).
TIP #4: When feeling overwhelmed, call a trusted friend or family member to talk about it and increase your social support.
TIP #5: Do some type of daily exercise such as walking, biking, running, weight training, yoga etc. Regular exercise boosts mood.
TIP #6: Take a couple 5 - 10 minute breaks throughout your day to do absolutely nothing. Focus on your breathing, breathe in deeply and slowly, then exhale in the same slow fashion focusing only on your breaths. This helps your mind get a break from the panic.
TIP #7: Avoid caffeine! Caffeine with anxiety is like throwing gasoline on a burning house. Caffeine increases your baseline anxiety, and in higher doses can even trigger panic attacks.
TIP #8: Make a play date. Nothing helps you get through a stressful day more than thinking about a play date to look forward to. Go to the movies with a friend, out to a social gathering, play with your dog/cat, watch a good movie or series on Netflix, etc.
TIP #9: Ditch the junk food and sugary beverages. Processed foods negatively effects your mood and robs you of the energy you need to solve problems.
TIP #10: Remember that anxiety NEVER lasts forever. It may seem like it lasts a long time because even a second of it is unwanted and uncomfortable, but soon this too shall pass and be behind you. You got this!
